Paulina gasped as the retriever's massive tawny frame hurtled over her ironwork fence.
She squeezed out a spray of oven cleaner.
It completely missed its target. The dog landed beyond her and bounded on down the slope.
She turned to pursue him, brandishing the spray can like a tomahawk. Her left foot slid, then caught in the ivy. She felt herself tumbling.
When she reached the bottom, bits of leaves and twigs clung to her clothes. She could feel something gritty in her mouth. Her cheek was scratched.
Panting, she struggled to get back on her feet. Her ankle collapsed in a jolt of blinding pain.
