The increasing technological complexity of our products is what has eroded our ability to evaluate them.
Today's technology has transformed the most basic and timeless of artifacts. A simple pot is now apt to be Corningware (whatever that is); a simple pan may be treated with space-age Teflon. Synthetic fibers may be woven into in the clothes we wear; foodstuffs as simple as apples may contain exotic chemicals like Alar, which for a time was regarded by many people as life-threatening to children.
