Why should a practice be
less worthy of respect than a religion?
It seems to me that Buddhism, especially the
Theravada branch
of it, may have some especially useful insights to offer along these
lines. Buddhist Enlightenment (as well as I can express it
within
the limitations of my current understanding) is a state of getting
beyond our own personal desires, and gratefully accepting life as it
actually is.
This appears to fit remarkably well with the
view of souls that I now hold—i.e., as beings that have shed all the
physical equipment by which they might directly make things happen, and
whose main interactions with our world seem to be offering helpful
wisdom and guidance to those who need it.
