How About My Friend
in the MRI Machine?

Requiring that communication with John McCain take a dramatically vivid form (like outright seeing him or hearing his voice) in order to be taken seriously is unreasonable for all the same reasons it would be with St. Erlembaldo.

We do sometimes hear, though, of people interpreting something they’ve experienced as miraculous or otherwise supernatural simply because they want so strongly for it to have been this way. Could my own feeling of connecting with John McCain have been just a reflection of something I hoped for—whether consciously or subconsciously?

In my particular case, this doesn’t seem especially likely.  Remember, I’m the guy who balked at the idea of praying to a saint.   The idea of praying to (or otherwise attempting to communicate with) a dead stranger would never have occurred to me.
