It might be helpful (and I hope not too blasphemous) to think of God as an extreme version of
The Wisdom of the
Octopuses, only crossed with the essence of the Holy
Trinity—then extended out exponentially into the billions.
What
if the most common way God, as an infinite multitude of souls, causes
things to happen in our world is by providing us with helpful thoughts
which, as a side effect, create a feeling in us that somehow, they
might be originating outside ourselves?
I’ll be the first
to admit, all this can sound (even to me) a bit like a reprise of that
classic example of over-thinking theology, “How many angels can dance
on the head of a pin?”
It does a surprisingly good job, though, of explaining the unusual
personal experiences I’ve described.
