KCRA & the Safeway Meat Scandal (26)
EPILOGUE
There's still time for a legitimate followup story on Safeway's meats, but I'm not personally about to do it.
I can't. I was fired. Two days after the Safeway story broke.
It may have been just what management claimed it was: part of an overall staff cutback, necessitated by a darkening economic outlook. They said they were sorry to have to do it.
I have reason to doubt their explanation, though. For one thing, I was cut back when at least three reporters I had seniority over were kept on. It was a union shop, and management didn't like to tread too casually on the union's toes.
I also have it from an inside source (whose identity I'm obligated to protect) that I was not on the cutback list before the Safeway meat story broke.
