I called the San Francisco man, whose name was Fred Ross.  He told me that he had spoken for Interfaith at a news conference just that morning.  (KCRA had a San Francisco bureau, but for some reason we had declined to cover it.)

I put a variety of questions to Ross.   Exactly when, where, and in what courts had the lawsuits been filed?  Had they impressed the courts enough to at least not be thrown out immediately?  What cuts of meat were involved?  What kinds of evidence had been presented?  What percentage of the meat sampled had been found to be mislabeled?  Exactly who had determined that fat contents were too high?  How could I get in touch with lawyers for both sides, chemists, Interfaith's samplers--all the people directly involved?

Fred Ross replied in great detail and at great length.  It became clear that he'd done his homework.  It also became apparent that Interfaith's charges had not been hastily concocted.
