Realistically, the bulk of the efforts toward healing and reintegration will have to originate from America’s artists and intellectuals.

That’s just the way the communications process works.  If you want to reach people, you have to take the initiative.

You also need to use words and images that resonate with them.  Establishing a sense of kinship doesn’t hurt, either.

And of course, all of us (not just artists and intellectuals) need to remember that if we consistently emphasize our differences with people rather than our similarities, and insist on using words and images that we know are likely to just antagonize them, we can’t realistically expect to engage them in positive ways.
