With increased
institutionalization, many of the less desirable aspects of the
Counterculture became accentuated.
It might seem as if moving off the campuses and into an environment shared with people holding different kinds of values should have rubbed off some of the rougher edges of Counterculture adherents, leaving them more balanced and grounded.
In certain ways, this did occur. But in many others, the corners actually got sharper.

Dietary tut-tutting began to seem increasingly
prevalent--as well as out of touch with ordinary "horse sense."
Small and obscure plants proved capable of knocking
down giant dams.
Shy woodland creatures became party crashers who wouldn't leave.
Reproduction became constricted.
Misandrism became commonplace.
An increase in assimilation failed to produce a
corresponding decrease in alienation.
