There is a difference between mass violence and smart violence.  By putting the right troops in the right place at the right time, you can win wars with few deaths.

A perfect example is the bombing of the Iraqi nuclear reactor and the killing of the gun engineer Bull about 15 years ago. 

If those two acts hadn't happened, leaving a total of 2 weapons engineers (that is, people in the trade) dead, hundreds of thousands would have died in the Gulf War.

I agree that violence should be a last resort, but there are many instances where it must be used, to save huge numbers of lives.  In my opinion, the most important task facing civilization today is to teach barbarians that violence doesn't pay, and the only way to do it is through smarter violence.

The only body that can really do it now is the U.S.
