After a moment she became aware of an interruption in Kasha's happy ramblings. A strange dog--a muscular boxer--had appeared at the fence.
The dog froze Kasha with a snort and a hard, peremptory stare.
"Hey! Sssst! Git!" Paulina advanced toward the boxer, throwing out her forearms in a shoeing motion.
The dog paid her no notice. As his nostrils picked up more of Kasha’s scent, he wriggled slightly and let out a low half-growl, half-whine.
Kasha advanced haltingly toward him, her tail beginning a hesitant wag.
The boxer yelped more urgently, then lurched suddenly toward Kasha.
Kasha startled and retreated several feet. The dog snorted, pawing at the fence. Kasha stood rooted, her tail no longer wagging, and her spine beginning to curl into a cringe.
A blast of water struck the boxer on the flank. Whirling to find its source, he was sprayed again, this time in the face.
Paulina sneered menacingly as she gripped the nozzle of the hose. She had her range and angle now. The dog feinted to the left and then to the right, but she kept up a steady blast.
The dog turned away, circled back once more, then trotted away in confusion.
