Like Something Out of Hollywood (3)

Hamner refined the concept for a television Christmas special, The Homecoming, which aired in 1972.  The special metamorphosed almost immediately into a prime time series.

The Waltons then went on to prove, week after ratings week, that audiences were as willing to have their heartstrings tugged by fond reminiscences of family sharing and caring as they were to have their adrenalin pumped by shootouts and car chases.

The show stayed on the air for nearly a decade.

After The Waltons, Earl Hamner, Jr. was ready for a new challenge.  Having demonstrated his power to win over audiences with tales of family warmth, honesty, cohesiveness, and decency, he went on to create and produce the series, Falcon Crest--a Dallas knockoff about greed, scheming, chicanery, and vicious infighting in a family business.
