Pontiac's new image retained some links to the products themselves.
In Pontiac's image-revamping campaign of the 1960s, certain modifications to the products themselves were needed to assist the symbolism and associations employed in the advertising.
To build a macho performance image, for instance, Pontiac found it necessary to drop a big engine into a small car that it designated the GTO, thereby creating a pop-culture legend from which all Pontiacs were able to draw symbolic strength.
