Artist's Notes
This train struck me as something more than just transportation. The misty quality of the light gave it a certain aura, and juxtaposed against the near car's gleaming metal sides, the columns of the station seemed much older. The longer I looked at them, the more I saw the timeless Greco-Roman designs they're based on. It was almost like the station could be some kind of temple.
What to make of the small stepstool? Who had put it there? And for whom? With no one else to be seen on the platform, it was as if the entire train had been sent to pick up just one person. The train also seemed to be extending its own steps downward, in a mute but compelling invitation.
Was this some kind of ghost train--maybe something out of Rod Serling's "Twilight Zone?"
Then as I continued working on the painting, I ended up thinking of it more in terms of the "train to Jordan" that The Impressions sang about in their classic 1964 gospel hit, "People Get Ready."
