Artist's Notes
There's something about the rendering of this model's body--particularly the torso--that puts me in mind of the hood ornament on a Rolls-Royce. She's not actually shiny, but the fluid patterns of light and dark that define her physical mass are very much the kinds of things you see on chromed surfaces--or on water. I feel this helps express her underlying fluid, feminine nature.
In real life, the model was leaning against an old chair in an environment that was basically devoid of other visual interest or appeal, so setting her in some sort of richer context presented an interesting challenge. My evolving technique of eliminating linear boundaries between figure and ground at the light end of the spectrum prevented me from giving the upper wall some sort of observable color, but not adding anything at all there would have rendered too much of the painting blank.
The wallpaper provided a useful compromise. It started out in more of a diamond-shaped pattern, but that clashed disgreeably with the flowing curves of the model's body. Working in some more feminine softness and curvature and flow resulted in a pattern that I find curiously (and perhaps appropriately) reminiscent of DNA.
