Artist's Notes

Often we don’t realize what’s remarkable around us.  Or because we haven’t seen it in paintings before, we might not consider it an appropriate subject for art.

I had to fight a certain sensation that I was creating a real estate ad when I was painting this.  But I went ahead with it, because there’s something here that I really wanted to memorialize.

Certainly the house is part of it.  I drove by it on my way home from work every day for more than a year, admiring it, and frankly wishing I could have it.  But the surrounding area is also important to me—even the street.

It represents a lifestyle that would be astonishing to most people in most of the history of this planet.  All that space and openness for one family—in the middle of all that nurturant greenery—served by broad, leafy boulevards that whisk you by so effortlessly.  I don’t think most of us will realize how remarkable it all is, until it’s gone.

Given some of the forces currently swirling around is, that may be sooner than we think.  I wanted to capture it in its prime.
