Artist's Notes
In the California Delta, narrow local waterways can suddenly open onto shipping channels for international commerce. This is a place of great serenity in a far less hurried corner of the world. Yet if you look a little closer, the array of sophisticated-looking instrumentation deployed on the pier serves as a reminder that far more activity goes on in this channel than currently meets the eye.
There's also an interesting yin-yang type of interplay between the straight, purposeful, masculine structure of the pier and the subtle, liquid, feminine nature of the world into which it projects--an aqueous environment that extends even into the mist in the air, then evanesces in a golden glow of sunlight. The straight lines and geometric forms of the pier also become progressively looser and more freeform in the foreground water in which they're reflected. Meanwhile, in the middle ground, the water mirrors the pier so closely that it can be difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.
Yin. Yang. Fusion. Wholeness.
You can find all kinds of unexpected meaning in the mostly-forgotten world of the California Delta.
