Artist's Notes

I find this scene really makes me want to know what’s around the bend—even though I already know intellectually.

This is another place that’s dense with memories for me, from the time I spent as my son’s primary caregiver when he was around two years old.

On the opposite side of the path is what used to be called the jungle, and is now referred to in a more politically correct way as the rain forest.  In its older mode, the “jungle” was used in so many movie scenes that an entire generation of Americans formed off-kilter ideas about what tropical forests must look like.

I’m happy with the way the looseness of the depiction worked out here.  Someone told me he could “smell the foliage.”
