Artist's Notes

Here’s another example of the fascination I didn’t know I had with abandoned things.

Actually, more appealed to me about this store than just its abandonment.  There was something striking about the contemporary graffiti on a building so obviously from another era.  The building also has interesting character in its own right.  Among other things, the upturned corners of the tin roof seem to have a Chinese feel—and Chinese merchants are certainly part of the Delta’s heritage.  Then again, the upturned effect at the corners could be just a result of the roof sagging.  I like that ambiguity.

I also like the ambiguity in the building’s abandonment.  If you look closely, you’ll see that although the commercial windows are boarded over, the door seems to be functional.  And what about that curtain in the window of the shop’s living area:  Is it common for deserted buildings to have curtains?  Could somebody still be living there?  If they are, what kind of life is it?  What's going on in the darkness behind the bright glare of the sun?
