Moses of G Street (4)

A bulldozer and a wrecker's ball came in, and they leveled the Y where Moses used to sleep.  Then they started building—new office space, a multilevel parking garage.  The new buildings went up so fast, they almost rose as you watched.

Eventually the warm weather returned.  So did Moses.

I happened on him on what seemed to be his first morning back. He was wandering forlornly around the vicinity of his former "home," apparently wondering what in the world to do now.

Within a few days, he adapted.  He claimed squatter's rights in the doorway of a drugstore—one that closed early and opened late, after his needs of it had been fulfilled.

In that doorway, more visible than before, he once again became an accustomed part of my morning routine.  As before, he always had his cup of coffee and his cigarette.

He fared reasonably well through the remainder of the spring.  Summer passed, and after that, fall.  Finally there were hints of winter.
