Artist's Notes

I needed two photographic images to properly illustrate this painting:   a standard shot of the painting as a whole, and an inset of its primary human subjects, who are dwarfed and rendered almost invisible by the spectacle in which they find themselves.

It's a world where entertainment and consumption have fused into a single all-encompassing entity.  The electronic display in the center, basically a tower of light, is such a compelling presence as to suggest a kind of quasi-religious icon.

It would be foolish to try to deny the attraction of this invented world, with its brilliant lights and colors,  its ceaseless drama and larger-than-life scale.  But it would be profoundly unwise not to also take notice of it what it does to the real people who inhabit it.
