Artist's Notes

One of the things that made this scene remarkable to me was that only an hour or so before I came upon it, I'd been in the middle of a cool pine forest in the mountains near the Palomar Observatory.

Where I grew up, you had to drive awhile to get from a place that was green and mountainous to a place that was green and just somewhat hilly.  To get from there to a full-on desert was an arduous trek that required days. 

I find this kind of variety one of the more delicious aspects of living in California.
