Among my Cotta ancestors were seven Roman consuls (men elected by the Senate to essentially be co-presidents of Rome for a year)—one of whom was also a personal friend and mentor of the great orator Cicero.

Two other Cottas played historical roles that left me even more goggle-eyed.
